ALICE M. HOOD SMITH, 88, a resident of Columbia City, died at 5:50 pm Sunday, July 8, 2007 in the Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.

She was born in Whitley County on May 26, 1919, a daughter of Homer and Ethel Hill Johnston. Her formative years were spent on the Johnston farm in Thorncreek Township and she graduated from the Columbia City High School in 1938.

On September 10, 1939, she was united in marriage to Robert D. Hood. Mr. Hood died on January 1, 1984.

She was later married to William E. Smith and they spent their married life at Wilson Lake. Mr. Smith died December 22, 1995.

She served as the first Welcome Wagon Hostess in Whitley County and also served as the first woman Bailiff for the Whitley County Circuit Court assuming the position from her father in law, Thomas Hood. She retired from the court in May 1981.

She was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Tri Kappa, Coterie and very active in the Republican Party.

The surviving relatives include three daughters, Barbara (Ed) Miller, Susan (Tim) Langohr both of Columbia City, Mary (Steve) Smith, Fullerton, CA; seven grandsons; ten great grandchildren; three brothers, James Johnston, Columbia City, Ivan Johnston, in Montana, Lyle Johnston in South Carolina and a step son Douglas (Vicki) Smith, Avon Lake, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.

A celebration of life will be held at 5 pm Friday in the Smith and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Ben Whitefield, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating, followed by a Tri Kappa memorial service. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 pm Friday at the funeral home.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Humane Society of Whitley County.
