Born on Jan. 17, 1917 in Whitley County, he was a son of John A. and Amelia (Erdmann) Travelbee. His formative years were spent in Columbia City and he graduated from Columbia City High School in 1935.

On Oct. 22, 1939 he was united in marriage to Erma M. Baker and they made their home on North Main Street in Columbia City. Together they helped organize the Teen Canteen and served as the original host and hostess. Mrs. Travelbee died March 26, 2000.

He was first employed at Phillips Service Station on South Main Street before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Following his honorable discharge, he was employed at Weatherhead for a brief period, then Dana Corporation for more than 25 years.

A lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, he was a member of American Legion Post 98, was Republican precinct committeeman for many years, district public relations chairman for Anthony Wayne Council of Boy Scouts and officiated many high school basketball games following his military discharge.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. John D. Travelbee of Columbia City; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Margaret Jacobs of Kendallville, Jean Black of Columbia City and Betty Sefcik of Berne.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Rod and Bill.
