Jane E. Lawson, of Bloomington, Ind., died Sunday, April 20, 2003, after a short illness. Her immediate family will grieve privately. Friends, family and neighbors are invited to a celebration of her life at a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. May 31 at Chapman's Restaurant and Banquet Center, 300 State Road 466. In preparation for the celebration, a picture or vignette sharing notable perspectives from her friends, family or neighbors may be sent to Dana Burton, 3505 N. Prow Road, Bloomington, IN 47404. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Monroe County Public Library Foundation, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington, IN 47408; The Community Kitchen of Monroe County Inc., 917 South Rogers St., Bloomington, IN 47403; or a favorite charity.

Jane Eleanor Gates was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Dec. 9, 1917, and spent her formative years in Columbia City, Ind. She was the first of two daughters of D'Maris Marguerite (nee Scott) and John E. Gates. She was a graduate of Columbia City High School and later received two degrees from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and taught equitation at Stephens College. She married John Lawson in Columbia in 1946, where she lived until 1963.

She returned to Columbia City in 1968 and worked at Gates Bros. Abstract and Title until 1983. Jane Lawson retired in Bloomington in 1983 and led an active life of travel, playing golf and gardening. She was an active member of the Cascades Ladies Golf Association and played regularly with many friends in Bloomington and in Florida through September 2002.

Survivors include two children, Dana L. Burton, a librarian of Bloomington and Mark G. Lawson, an attorney of Tallahassee; a sister, Mary Alice Pugh of Columbia City; and four grandchildren, Annie Burton and Sam Burton, both of Bloomington, and Greer Lawson and Emily Lawson, both of Tallahassee. She was preceded in death by her son, John Lawson Jr., and her husband, John Lawson Sr.
