A lifelong friend, Jack Walker, said, "He was just a good person." The two were born two days apart in Wolf Lake Hospital and went through school together, forming a friendship that lasted decades. They were best men at each other's weddings, and Jack and his wife were godparents to Dick and Stella's eldest daughter, Angie. "I never had a brother other than him. I'd stay at his home (growing up), and he'd stay at mine."

Dick liked golf, and he and Jack and two other friends from high school, Austin Spencer and Larry Gregory, would go visit another former classmate, Paul Radke, in Michigan, and maybe get in some pheasant hunting.

"He devoted his time and energies to the people of Whitley County," Harold said. "He was a very religious person; he was a long-time member of the First Church of God."

Jack said, "He was the kind of guy, he'd do anything for you. He didn't smoke, and he didn't drink. He was just a good person, and a friend to everybody.

"I don't know of anybody that would say anything bad about him."

Harold said he wants to remember his former business partner of more than 25 years and a business associate for 33 years as a friend as well as a businessman.

"We had a very good relationship," Harold said. "One thing that's difficult is to be in business with a person and maintain a good relationship. We didn't always see eye-to-eye, but we would resolve it."

Jack said, "He liked to play some golf, but what he did was work six days a week at the store."

Harold summed up the feelings of many by saying, "He devoted his whole life for the service of Whitley County."
