a resident of Columbia City, died Saturday morning, August 4, 2007.

He was born September 13, 1938 in Whitley County, Indiana a son of Guy and Margaret Elizabeth (Kuglin) Smith. He graduated from Columbia City High School.

On September 19, 1956 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged June 25, 1962.

On September 21, 1959 he was united in marriage to MaDonna R. Cunningham. They made their home in Huntington until 1962 when they moved to Columbia City. Mrs. Smith died April 8, 2001.

He owned and operated Smitty's Electric from 1962 until 2006 and retired from the Columbia City Police Department in 1984 with 20 years of service.

On December 29, 2002 he was united in marriage to Barbara Ann (Barker) Malott. They have always made their home in Columbia City.

He was a member of Columbia City Lodge #189 Free & Accepted Masons, Mizpah Shrine, Whitley County Shrine, F.O.P., American Legion Post #98, V.F.W. #5582, Moose Lodge, Eagles #1906 and was a past honorary president of Old Settlers Day Association.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Barbara; a son, Thomas J. Smith of Columbia City; a daughter, Tammy J. Smith of Fort Wayne; a step son, John D. Malott of Columbia City; three step grandchildren; a sister, Lula Belle Little of Columbia City; and three brothers, Jay Smith of Lagrange, Tex Smith of St. Petersburg, Florida and Rex Loe of Washington D.C.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a step daughter, Wendy Kautz.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2007 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Dale Moser officiating. The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and also 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A Masonic service will be conducted by the Columbia City Lodge #189 F. & A.M. following the visitation Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

The burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Huntington with the American Legion Post #98 presenting military honors.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Whitley County.
